7 Steps to Better Hearing

CONSULT2Patient quality of care is of fundamental importance to Hidden Hearing. Our Audiologists carry out a comprehensive hearing assessment completing the following important seven steps when prescribing any of our invisible hearing aids.

  • Step 1, our Audiologists carry out a full case history which includes a brief medical history.
  • Step 2, an Otoscopy is performed to BSA standards and reveals the condition of the outer ear canal and the tympanic membrane. Tuning fork tests can give an indication whether the loss is conductive, sensorineural, or unilateral.
  • Step 3 is Sound Field Testing. This test gives us statistical information on the ability to hear words reproduced both in quiet and in noisy environments.
  • Step 4 is a full audiometric test to BSA procedures. This test includes air conduction and bone conduction testing  during this test hearing thresholds are recorded.
  • Step 5 allows the patient to experience hearing amplification with instruments which are prescription programmed to match the hearing loss.
  • Step 6 requires the patient to return for their hearing aid fitting. This consultation includes guiding and training the patient on how to use and care for their hearing aids and what to expect from them.
  • Step 7 is the follow up and checking of the rehabilitation process. This follow up visit will also see a repeat of the sound field testing using hearing amplification. In almost all cases this second test reveals improved scoring on word recognition.

Showband Legend Dickie Rock is full of praise for Hidden Hearing

Recently, Irish music legend Dickie Rock was gracious and appreciative enough of Hidden Hearing’s service to send in a wonderful Testimonial.“I’ve been blessed with a really enjoyable music career but I suppose it was no surprise that it would eventually impact on my hearing. I didn’t really notice when my hearing started to deteriorate a few years ago, but my wife and children started to notice that I would have the television turned up too loud. I can’t say enough about the guys in Hidden Hearing, who provided a first class service from day one and they continue to provide an excellent aftercare service.”

Courtney DeJoie was honored for helping to change people's perception of people with hearing loss.

We came across this article from New Jersey via North Jersey.com where a Hidden Hearing style heroes awards program doing similar work awarded a special cert to a very courageous 9 year old. An article appeared about how 9-year-old Courtney DeJoie, who overcame the challenges she faced when, as a first-grader, it was found that she had a hearing deficit, was published in Community Life. After extensive testing, she was fitted with hearing aids in the summer before she began second grade. Her mother, Donna, said, at first, she was “very resistant” about wearing them. But that summer she met three children – triplets – who would soon become her best friends. Two of them are hearing impaired. Her mom said that meeting them made all the difference.

By the time the school year started she wasn’t self-conscious about her hearing aids. But she faced another challenge, this one academic. She struggled with her school work because it had been difficult for her to keep up before she got her hearing aids. She got the academic support she needed by switching to Brookside School, where the triplets went to school, and goes to classes with her hearing impaired friends.

Her second grade teacher at Washington School invited her to come and speak to her current students about what it’s like to be hearing impaired. And she wrote a book about how she met her best friends.

Her story inspired her audiologist at Valley Hospital, Patricia E. Connelly, PhD, who diagnosed her hearing impairment, and Tom Higgins, of Advanced Hearing Services in Ramsey, who fitted her with hearing aids, to nominate her for an, “Oticon Focus on People Award,” offered by Oticon, a company that designs and manufactures hearing aids. Connelly said Courtney, “exemplifies everything wonderful about being a great kid, first, and, second, about not letting hearing loss impact at all in a negative way.”

Although Courtney wasn’t a finalist, she received an honorary award in recognition of her achievements, dedication and spirit, demonstrating that hearing loss does not have to limit a person’s ability to succeed.

Providing the best hearing healthcare services in north

Ken Viney is commercial director of Hidden Hearing, a healthcare company providing hearing care solutions for adults in Northern Ireland.

What was your first job ?My first job was a hearing aid audiologist.

What qualifications do you have ? My professional qualification is Hearing Aid Audiologist Registered with the Health Professionals Council.

What do you attribute your success to? I have good empathy with people and am always 100% honest in my dealings with both employees and customers. I believe consistency in approach is valuable and also I have a very strong work ethic.

How would you describe yourself to someone who had never met you? From a business perspective, I lead by example always giving 100%. I am goal-motivated and my current goal is to maintain Hidden Hearing as the best provider in Northern Ireland and to continue to expand that vision.

If you could change one thing about doing business in Northern Ireland, what would that be? More joined up thinking. For example the NHS in Northern Ireland could offer a voucher system to patients whereby if the patient wants the hospital to supply a hearing system it would be free but they could also use a voucher, set at a pre-determined value, to obtain a hearing system from the private sector. This would give the patient more choice and a reduced cost if they wished to purchase privately but also ensure that those who couldn’t afford it were still provided with a solution. A similar system works very well in other European countries.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in there career? Demonstrate a willingness to work hard, develop your skills and effective time planning and management is more important than you think.
